Reading is Heritage
A atual Biblioteca Municipal Raul Brandão tem a sua origem no Serviço de Bibliotecas e Apoio à Literatura da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, criado há cerca de 40 anos sob a direção de Branquinho da Fonseca. Em 1964, a direção do Círculo de Arte e Recreio (CAR) fez um pedido de apoio à Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e em 1966 foi inaugurada a Biblioteca Fixa nº 127 da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian na sede do CAR. Em 1975, esta Biblioteca é instalada no antigo edifício dos Paços do Concelho, mantendo-se aí até 1992.
Em maio de 1987 dá-se ênfase ao projeto de criação de uma Biblioteca Municipal há tanto desejada pela população, e tão necessário para todos aqueles que apreciam a leitura e um espaço de lazer.
A 7 de março de 1992, é inaugurada a Biblioteca Municipal Raul Brandão. O seu patrono, aquele que lhe dá nome, foi um grande escritor e dramaturgo que viveu de 1886 a 1901 em Guimarães.
Em maio de 1987 dá-se ênfase ao projeto de criação de uma Biblioteca Municipal há tanto desejada pela população, e tão necessário para todos aqueles que apreciam a leitura e um espaço de lazer.
A 7 de março de 1992, é inaugurada a Biblioteca Municipal Raul Brandão. O seu patrono, aquele que lhe dá nome, foi um grande escritor e dramaturgo que viveu de 1886 a 1901 em Guimarães.
Para comemorar os 30 anos da Biblioteca Raul Brandão, esta instituição juntamente com o artista Nuno Machado decidiram convidar-me a intervir na obra escultórica desenvolvida pelo artista. Esta obra tem a forma do número "30" e apresenta o tema: "Ler é património. 30 anos, 30 palavras".
Para comunicar esta temática, decidi criar a sensação de que a escultura fosse ela própria um livro, utilizei, portanto um grafismo que se representa na sua envolvente todas as partes da capa do livro.
Para o conteúdo da "capa" criei uma personagem alusiva ao escritor Raul Brandão, criando uma composição desta personagem em várias posições de leitura, Ilustradas e caligrafadas e que contêm as 30 palavras partilhadas pela Biblioteca.

The current Raul Brandão Municipal Library has its origins in the Library and Literature Support Service of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, created around 40 years ago under the direction of Branquinho da Fonseca. In 1964, the direction of the Círculo de Arte e Recreio (CAR) made a request for support to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and in 1966 the Fixed Library nº 127 of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was inaugurated at the CAR headquarters. In 1975, this Library was installed in the old Paços do Concelho building, remaining there until 1992.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Raul Brandão Library, this institution together with the artist Nuno Machado decided to invite me to intervene in the sculptural work developed by the artist. This work takes the form of the number "30" and presents the theme: "Reading is heritage. 30 years, 30 words".
To communicate this theme, I decided to create the sensation that the sculpture was itself a book, so I used a graphic that represents all parts of the book cover in its surroundings.
For the content of the "cover" I created a character alluding to the writer Raul Brandão, creating a composition of this character in various reading positions, illustrated and calligraphed and containing the 30 words shared by the Library.
